Postal strike looms as Royal Mail workers have voted overwhelmingly in favour of strike over pay and jobs row, in what has already been a described as a 'summer of discontent'. The news was announced by the Communication Workers Union (CWU) on Tuesday, July 19, making Royal Mail workers the latest in a series of groups to threaten strike action this summer.
Results from a ballot by members of the CWU revealed vast support for industrial action in protest at a 2 per cent pay offer. Of those who voted, 97.6 per cent backed strikes, on a turnout of 77 per cent. The union said it was an unprecedented result.
So far, no dates have been announced by the CWU for the strike, as it hopes the result of the ballot will place greater pressure on Royal Mail to negotiate a settlement and avoid any damaging strikes.
