SWAT team reaches suspect white van involved in standoff connected to LA mass shooting
New details continue to emerge about the 72-year-old man accused of killing 10 people in a mass shooting at a dance studio in Monterey Park, California.
Huu Can Tran, 72, is accused of opening fire inside the Star Ballroom Dance Studio on Saturday night, moments after thousands had gathered in the Asian-American community to celebrate Lunar New Year.
Ten were killed in the attack and another 10 wounded. Minutes later, a gunman entered a second club in the neighbouring city of Alhambra but was disarmed by bystanders before anyone could get hurt. The suspect then fled the scene.
On Sunday, investigators tracked Tran down to a parking lot in Torrance where police said he shot himself inside a white van during a standoff.
The motive for the massacre remains unclear, though acquaintances have revealed that he used to be a regular at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio and once complained that he believed the instructors were saying “evil things” about him.
Meanwhile, the first victim killed has now been identified by friends as Ming Wei Ma, the owner of the dance studio who heroically ran towards the gunman to try to stop the massacre.
