'Monster' Edinburgh cruise ship bigger than Arthur's Seat spotted docked in Leith

Locals reported seeing two European cruise liners docked off Edinburgh at the weekend.

“It’s like Piccadilly Circus today in Wardie Bay,” the Tweet said. “Monster cruise ship, Costa Fortuna, in Wardie Bay this afternoon.

"[Thousands of] people and crew and all the waste and emissions it brings with it, not to mention adding to traffic on Pier Place and inconvenience for locals. #ClimateEmergency #CruisesNotWelcome”

The Italian Costa Fortuna has a 3,470 passenger capacity and weighs in at more than 102,500 tonnes.

The 272-metre long ship - longer than 251-metre Arthur's Seat is high - has 14 decks and was docked in Edinburgh-Leith on Sunday during a 10-day cruise around the UK.

The ship sailed from the German coast last week before stopping in the Netherlands, Ireland and three other UK coastal ports. On Monday, the massive cruiser was docked at Newcastle-Upon-Tyne.

The French World Explorer owned and operated by Rivages du Mondes is a smaller vessel with a 180 passenger capacity.

The ship is 126 metres long and the smaller luxury cruise vessel has hybrid Rolls Royce engines. All 98 cabins have sea views.

The Tallink Victoria I Ferry is also currently docked in Leith and is hosting Ukrainian refugees until more permanent housing is available.

There are currently 1,400 people living on board, including around 500 children.

The Scottish government has a two year contract to licence the MS Victoria. Recent news has suggested that refugees could be forced to reside there until December 2024 if longer term options are not found.
