Monsoon may start withdrawing from West Bengal in 3 days: Meteorological Department

KOLKATA: Though the city received a spell of rain on Friday afternoon, monsoon will start withdrawing from parts of Bengal within the next three days, said the Met office.

North and central Kolkata were lashed by a thunderstorm and a spell of sharp shower, but the southern parts received drizzles. Southeasterly winds, that have been carrying in moisture from the sea and leading to frequent showers and thunderstorms over the last few weeks, will soon be replaced by the cool northwesterly winds.

The Met office has also predicted that a cyclonic circulation is set to form near Andaman islands on October 18. "It is not clear if it will intensify into a strong system," said RMC director G K Das.

Kolkata may receive another thundershower on Saturday, said weathermen. "Moisture incursion through southeasterly winds has been generating local clouds, leading to thunderstorms. This will cease by Sunday and southeasterly winds will be substituted by northwesterly winds, signalling onset of winter. We expect monsoon currents to start withdrawing from parts of Bengal by early next week," said Das.

CR Avenue, Thanthania, MG Road and Phears Lane were waterlogged after Friday's rain. A high tide in the Hooghly contributed to the flooding.
