Abu Dhabi: The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has become the first Gulf state to report a case of monkeypox, BBC reported on Wednesday.

UAE, health officials announced that they had detected a case in a traveller who had recently visited west Africa and is now receiving medical treatment, adding that they are "fully prepared" to handle any outbreak, adding that early surveillance protocols for detecting the disease were in place.

Along with it in Europe, the Czech Republic and Slovenia also reported their first cases of monkeypox, joining 18 other countries to detect the virus outside its African base.

Experts believe that the number of cases are expected to rise further, but the overall risk to the general population remains low. (UNI)
