Money Saving Expert issue home insurance warning to save hundreds of pounds

People are trying to save as much money as possible this year with bills set to rise for millions.

Because of this, experts have been sharing their thoughts on what households can do to slash their bills. One of the experts is Martin Lewis who is the founder of Money Saving Expert - often referred to as MSE - with the site shares some tips for everyone with or taking out home insurance.

According to experts at MSE, there are a few things that people need to be aware of before they take out a policy. Detailing the advice in a recent blog post, one expert from the savings website said that you can save £100s by switching your home insurance and there's an easy way to find cheap policies.

Money Saving advice for cheap home insurance policies

1. Don't auto-renew

Rather than opting in for your deal to auto-renew, instead check comparison sites. These sites, according to MSE, don't search identical insurers, nor give identical prices, so try as many as you've time for, in this order:

2. Compare against a quote from Direct Line

Unfortunately Direct Line doesn't appear on comparison sites and they are said to be competitive, with MSE urging people to also check them out.

3. See if cashback sites can beat the quotes you got above

Topcashback, according to MSE, gives £33 when you buy through its comparison whilst Quidco gives £28. It is however, worth checking whether or not you can get more by going direct to the insurer through Topcashback and Quidco's normal sites.

4. How much you cover makes a difference

Use a rebuild cost calculator to work out how much you need to insure for buildings cover, and a contents calculator so you don't underinsure your contents.
