Investigation launched at Glasgow hospital after two patients die in A&E waiting room
An investigation has been launched after two patients died from heart attacks while waiting to be seen in A&E. The patients were in a queue to be assessed at the Glasgow’s Queen Elizabeth University Hospital (QEUH) Accident & Emergency department.
The deaths occurred despite protocols in place for all arrivals to be triaged - a medical term for establishing the seriousness of a case – within 15 minutes. Health board officials are now looking into ‘pressures’ in patient care during the incidents at the QEUH, Scotland’s flagship £842million hospital which opened in 2015.
The Royal College of Emergency Medicine has warned that long waits for treatment have contributed to hundreds of avoidable deaths. Last week, Alex Cole-Hamilton, leader of the Scottish Liberal Democrats, demanded an inquiry into the number of patients who have died due to the ongoing crisis.
Scotland 'danger to life' weather warnings as tiles could be ripped from roofs
Scotland has been placed under two Met Office weather warnings with the country to be battered by heavy rain and strong winds over the coming days.
The first yellow weather warning concerns a downpour on Tuesday hitting much of the west coast and Highlands. Then on Wednesday, a wind warning covering the entirety of Scotland is in effect from midnight.
With 70 to 80 mph gusts predicted, the Met Office has warned of travel disruption and even a danger to life from flying debris. A further deluge of rain on Wednesday could prove to be an additional hazard for parts of the country.
Nicola Sturgeon accuses Tories of 'utter ineptitude' after Liz Truss u-turn on top tax rate
Nicola Sturgeon has accused the Conservatives of "utter ineptitude" after the UK Government announced it would no longer cut the top rate of income tax for millionaires.
The U-turn was made at 8am despite Liz Truss declaring yesterday she would not change her party's controversial economic policies.
The new prime minister and her chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng have faced a week of intense pressure after announcing a mini-budget which slashed taxes for the wealthy.
Van 'incinerated' after suddenly catching fire on busy Glasgow road
A van has caught fire in rush hour in Glasgow, halting traffic as emergency services descend on the scene.
Fire officers were called to Great Western Road, in the Kelvinbridge area, at around 4.20pm. A single appliance was sent to the scene of the fire, near Gartnavel Hospital, as cars mounted the central reservation to let it and an ambulance through.
Google Maps data shows that traffic is at a near standstill while firefighters address the blaze. It is unclear if anyone has been injured. A video shared on social media warned: "Avoid Great Western Road, both directions."
DWP shares new changes to PIP decision making process as it rejects call for full assessment review
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has rejected an online petition calling for a full review into how Personal Independence Payment (PIP) is delivered, focusing in particular on the role independent assessors play in the application process.
The ‘Full review of Personal Independence Payment (PIP) application process’ petition has been posted on the petitions-parliament website and received more than 11,310 signatures of support. The official response from DWP was triggered after the petition passed the 10,000 threshold - at 100,000 signatures, the petition will be considered for debate in Parliament.
DWP explained that changes it has recently made to the decision process in order to “make the right decision at the earliest opportunity so that claimants do not have to appeal” has resulted in a greater proportion of decisions being changed at Mandatory Reconsideration, without going to a tribunal.
