MONA’s C*nty Ladies Lounge Will Reopen For A ‘Victory Lap’, Only Allowing Men In For Housework Lessons

If you thought the exquisite hullabaloo around the Museum Of Old And New Art’s (MONA) Ladies Lounge couldn’t get any better — you thought wrong. Today, the women’s only space has reopened for a month-long “victory lap” after its legal win against a bloke who thought the lounges’ existence was discriminatory to men.

MONA‘s art curator Kirsha Kaechele made a dazzling statement on Instagram in which she confirmed the re-opening news before thanking Jason Lau — the man who took legal action against MONA — for “elevating” the space.

“When I created the Ladies Lounge I couldn’t have imagined the wonderful adventure I was embarking upon. It was an entirely practical act. I *had* to hang green silk curtains. I had to make that ‘art’. Then a beautiful man waltzed in and changed everything! He was a dream. He elevated us,” she wrote.

“So I would like to take a moment to thank him and the men who have brought us to this place, who have put me in this position.

“I wouldn’t be here (legs extended, champagne in hand, waited on by a handsome butler…) without you! So thank you Jason (sincerely, with all my heart), and Jason’s lawyer (less sincerely, but… let’s not dwell on details).”

Kaechele announced that The Ladies Lounge would be reopening on December 19 before closing forever on January 13. In the IG post, she invites anyone who identifies as a woman to a “victory dance”.

“In recognition of our fight against the patriarchy and the support you’ve shown, let us gather in the space where it all started,” she wrote.

“We’ll bathe in champagne and enjoy the kind of ecstatic release that comes only after a hard-won battle.”

The lounge will feature specifically commissioned artworks by women, for women that can be enjoyed whilst sipping on champagne and enjoying a luxurious, special space where the patriarchy is on mute.

The First Lady of MONA did note that a select few men miiiighhhtt make it through the velvet green curtains of the lounge… but only if they are willing to attend “ironing and laundry folding lessons” in the space. For those interested, you can apply through MONA’s app, The O.

In case you missed it, MONA was sued by Jason Lau in April 2023. He argued to the Tasmanian Civil and Administrative Tribunal that the space was discriminating against his gender and surprisingly, old mate actually won. The Tribunal instructed that MONA either close the lounge or allow men to enter the space.

Instead of letting men in, Kaechele decided to close the space, moved all of the artwork into the ladies’ room (impeccable) and appealed to the Supreme Court of Tasmania.

Thankfully, the Supreme Court ruled that the Ladies Lounge did not breach any discrimination laws after all. Instead, they ruled that any men offended by the lounge were little tiny babies going wah-wah-wah. (In case it wasn’t explicitly obvious, they did not rule that. I’m just trying to be funny).

Despite the legal battle, Kaechele handled it with style, grace and an amazing group of supporters who helped the legal strife become an incredibly watchable spectacle.

When I grow up, I want to be Kaechele.
