Shocking footage shared with Edinburgh Live shows two young men rushing up the tenement stairs. One wearing red trackies uses the bannister behind for support and boots the door in.

As the door flies open, thick clouds of dark grey smoke come plummeting out as the local hero calls out for the trapped casualty run for his life.

He desperately shouts: "Can you get to the door?" Getting no response, he shouts again: "The door is open if you can run."

The selfless hero calls out one more time as he covers his t-shirt with his face due to the thick smoke choking him, before fleeing the fire.

Emergency services confirmed that two people were taken to hospital as a result of the blaze - one has reportedly been released from hospital while another remains in NHS care.

Locals later told Edinburgh Live how they had to grab anything they could while fleeing their smoke-filled homes and were left standing on the street for five hours as hero firefighters battled the inferno.
