Moment Edinburgh firefighters rescue hero colleague from burning Jenners building

A video shows the moment a brave firefighter was pulled from the Jenners building in Edinburgh’s city centre after they tried to tackle the large blaze.

The snaps show courageous members of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service accessing the building from the South St Davids Street side entrance.

Four firefighters can be seen one after the other going into the former department store as black smoke billows out onto the busy capital street.

Two of those who entered the building are then seen to be rescuing a colleague with each fire personnel supporting one side of the rescued firefighter as they move to safety.

Two further SFRS members are spotted at the scene as they try to offer assistance to the rescued party who looks to be covered in black soot but is using their legs whilst being taken away from the burning building.

It is not yet known the condition of this firefighter.

Earlier this afternoon the Scottish Ambulance Service said that they had received a call at around 11.49am to respond to an incident at the Jenners building on Princes Street.

A spokesperson for them said: "The Scottish Ambulance Service is currently in attendance at a fire in the former Jenners building on Princes Street, Edinburgh, alongside The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service and Police Scotland. We received the call at 11.49hrs and have dispatched 14 resources to the scene.”

The neighbouring Marks and Spencer and the Mercure Hotel, in Princes Street, were closed as firefighters worked next door in the former department store. Other buildings were also evacuated.

Edinburgh shoppers were also warned to stay away from the city centre on Monday afternoon as emergency services continued to battle the fire at the old Jenners building.

Dozens of fire engines remain at the scene along with police and the ambulance service.

Edinburgh police have urged people to leave and avoid the area whilst buses have been diverted.

The surrounding roads have been closed off to traffic and pedestrians. North and South St David Street, St Andrew Square, George Street at St Andrew Square, and Rose Street have been closed to traffic. Some pedestrian diversions are also in place in the vicinity.

A statement from Edinburgh police said: "South St David Street, Edinburgh, and a number of surrounding roads, have been closed to traffic and pedestrians following a building fire. Please avoid the area if possible and follow directions regarding alternative routes."
