Australian swimmer Mollie O’Callaghan made headlines at the Tokyo Olympics by setting a new Olympic record in the women’s 200m freestyle event. O’Callaghan's remarkable performance secured her the gold medal, edging out her teammate Ariarne Titmus in a thrilling race.
O’Callaghan's winning time of 1:53.27 not only earned her the gold but also surpassed Titmus’ previous Olympic record set during the Tokyo Olympics three years ago. Titmus, who finished closely behind in 1:53.81, had to settle for the silver medal in this intense showdown between the two Australian swimmers.
Interestingly, O’Callaghan and Titmus both train together in the same pool under the guidance of the same coach. Earlier this year, Titmus had set a world record at the Australian Olympic Trials, surpassing O’Callaghan’s previous record. However, at the Olympics, it was O’Callaghan who emerged victorious, breaking Titmus’ Olympic record and claiming the coveted gold medal.
Meanwhile, Siobhan Bernadette Haughey of Hong Kong put up a strong performance to secure the bronze medal with a time of 1:54.55, rounding off the podium in the women’s 200m freestyle event.
