Mohammed Shami prioritizes fitness for upcoming Test series against England

NEW DELHI: Star Indian pacer Mohammed Shami, currently recovering from an ankle injury, has outlined his primary focus on achieving optimal fitness in preparation for the upcoming home Test series against England.

The 33-year-old, who played a crucial role in India's ODI World Cup campaign, was recently honored with the Arjuna award, India's second-highest sporting honor.

During a reception hosted by the sports ministry for this year's national sports awards winners, Shami highlighted the importance of maintaining fitness for sustained performance.

"My aim is to keep myself fit as far as possible, as the next two tournaments and series are big. I will focus on fitness," said Shami, who claimed 24 wickets in seven World Cup games.

Speaking about his skill, Shami expressed confidence, stating, "There is no tension about my skill, as I believe if I maintain my fitness, skill will be there on the ground."

Currently undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore, Shami missed the recent series against South Africa after not receiving clearance from the BCCI Medical team. The upcoming five-Test series against England is scheduled to commence on January 25.

Shami, who has taken 229 wickets in 64 Tests throughout his career, expressed gratitude for receiving the Arjuna award, calling it a "dream come true" and the "fruit of my hard work." He emphasized the role of destiny while encouraging consistent hard work for athletes.
