Mohamed Salah injury: Arne Slot reveals update after Liverpool star asks to come off in Galatasaray rout

Mohamed Salah is set to be assessed after suffering an injury during Liverpool’s 4-0 Champions League win over Galatasaray.

The Egyptian forward had an eventful night in the last-16 second-leg tie at Anfield on Wednesday, seeing a poor penalty saved before going on to score a brilliant goal - his 50th in Europe’s elite club competition as he became the first African player ever to reach that milestone.

Salah shrugged off his botched spot-kick in first-half stoppage time to play a starring role in Liverpool’s quick-fire blitz after the break, also registering a fine assist for Hugo Ekitike’s goal that put Arne Slot’s resurgent side ahead in the tie after Dominik Szoboszlai’s earlier strike had cancelled out Galatasaray’s first-leg lead.

Having seen a number of other efforts saved, he went on to wrap up the scoring with an excellent curled effort as Liverpool scored three goals in just 11 minutes, with Ryan Gravenberch also on target as the hosts secured a quarter-final date with holders Paris Saint-Germain next month and the chance at revenge for last season’s last-16 exit on penalties at Anfield.

However, Salah’s dramatic evening ended on somewhat of a sour note as he picked up a knock and signalled to the bench that he needed to come off, replaced by Cody Gakpo with just over 15 minutes to play on Merseyside.

Slot confirmed afterwards that Salah had indeed picked up an injury, thought it is too early at this stage to determine if he will be available for Saturday’s lunchtime trip to Brighton in the Premier League.

That game is followed by an international break, with Liverpool then travelling to Manchester City in a blockbuster FA Cup quarter-final tie in early April ahead of their latest two-legged meeting with PSG, the winners of which will play either Real Madrid or Bayern Munich in the last four of the Champions League.

“He was asking for a substitution, not because he felt he'd scored enough, but he felt something,” Slot told reporters when asked about Salah’s injury after the win over Galatasaray.

“So let's see where he is for the weekend and afterwards.”
