Mohamed Salah given Ballon d'or warning if he does not stay at Liverpool

Tony Cascarino believes Mohamed Salah can challenge Kenny Dalglish as the greatest player to play for Liverpool if he stays at Anfield for three more years.

Salah scored his 150th goal for the club during the 3-1 win over Norwich on Saturday, and is already an Anfield legend after playing a pivotal role in the Reds’ recent Champions League and Premier League triumphs.

However, the 29-year-old’s contract expires in the summer of 2023 and as yet there isn’t an agreement in place to extend his deal.

Cascarino believes that if Salah stays at Liverpool he’ll not only continue to develop as a player but could even emulate Dalglish’s achievements of multiple titles and European cups.

“He’s going to play his best football at Anfield because of the manager and the player’s that he’s got alongside him, that fundamentally make him better," he told talkSPORT .

“Mo is a huge talent and can challenge the likes of King Kenny as one of the greatest players to ever play for Liverpool.

“Kenny did it over a longer period of time, and won a lot of league titles, it’s an ask but Mo can easily achieve that if he stays another three years at Anfield.”

Cascarino also claimed that Salah stands the best chance of winning the Ballon d'or if he remains with the Reds.

The Egyptian finished seventh in the 2021 awards and the gong has been won by either Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo for 12 of the last 13 years.

However, Cascarino insists everything is set up for him at Liverpool to break their duopoly.

And he has warned it would be more difficult for Salah to claim the prize elsewhere.

He added: “He [Salah] has to try and win the Ballon d'or, it’s become a very important trophy because Ronaldo and Messi have dominated it.

“Can he win two out of the next five? I think he can achieve that Liverpool, I think if he moved elsewhere, lots of clubs don’t have the infrastructure that Liverpool have got; for that team to play the way that suits Mo Salah.

“With [Luis] Diaz coming in you’re looking at a forward that fits into their style, the way they play.”
