MOHALI: Shots fired at Ropar resident at Phase V market parking lot on Sunday night were the outcome of two goons carrying out their first carjacking that landed them in police net in less than 24 hours of their crime.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Vivek Sheel Soni said one of the accused identified as Rohit Kumar was arrested and main accused Hardev Singh Cheema was undergoing treatment for self-inflicted bullet injury at Government Multi-specialty Hospital, Sector 16, Chandigarh. While taking out a pistol, Hardev accidentally shot himself, the SSP said. Hardev is undergoing trial in an attempt to murder case with Chandigarh Police and was out on bail after remaining in judicial custody for more than two years. He will be formally arrested once doctors declare him fit, the SSP said. "The cause of firing was carjacking. This was their first attempt to rob a car. When owner Harwinder Singh resisted, the accused opened fire. Harvinder was hit by three bullets," the SSP said.
Police claimed to have recovered the snatched Hyundai i20 car, Rs 1.87 lakh, five gold bangles, one gold chain, a pair gold tops and two gold rings from the car.
The two had come on a Honda Activa scooter to snatch the car, he said. "The scooter has been seized along with .32 bore country-made pistol, four live cartridges, two magazines and a knife," the SSP said.
A special team under supervision of DSP Sukhnaj Singh, inspector Shivdeep Singh Brar, SHO, Phase I, and inspector Shiv Kumar, in-charge, crime investigation agency, was set up. The SSP said by midnight, one PCR vehicle traced the car and took it in their custody. The car was abandoned near Shahimajra village in Mohali. The SSP commended PCR officers head constable Harvinderpal Singh and Harish Kumar.
