The Moffat Classic Car Rally returned to the town for its 25th year at the weekend.
The 400 visiting vehicles took part in a road run to St Mary’s Loch before the rally at the Moffat showground where visitors got to see a large display of classic and vintage cars, motorcycles and other vehicles.
And despite the rain, everyone who turned up had a great time after it being cancelled for two years in a row because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Under the guidance of organiser, 84-year-old Gordon Bisset, of Kirkton near Dumfries, the popular event has grown into the country’s top two-day event for classic cars. He started the event, which generates upwards of £150,000 for the local businesses as well as funding for three cancer charities, in memory of his wife Alison, who died from the disease in 2000.
However, health conditions and his age have forced Gordon to reluctantly step down from the rally.
He is hoping it will continue next year with a new organiser.
Gordon said: “I am not getting any younger and it is a lot of work and I have decided to retire. The rally is not just about me.
“I get an awful lot of help on the day from 45 volunteers who have to operate five fields with three entrance gates over three shifts.
“It could not go ahead without them and I want to thank them for all they have done over the years.”
Tributes were paid to Gordon following the event.
Angela McCormack of Macmillan Cancer Support said: “Many congratulations Gordon. Well done on reaching the incredible milestone of 25 years organising the Moffat Car Rally.
“You’ve done so much over the years to help raise funds for Macmillan. Thanks again for all of your fantastic fundraising efforts.”
A spokesman from Moffat Rugby Club added: “Well done Gordon, a massive event in the town’s calendar and a huge boost for local businesses and charities alike.
And on Visit Moffat Facebook page a statement said: “So many people will want to thank him for his work, his selflessness and his big heart.”
