A 91-year-old man has been hospitalised after being hit by a car while riding his mobility scooter in West Boldon.
Emergency services were called to the serious crash with a car colliding with the pensioner on the mobility scooter on the A184 at around 12.30pm.
The A184 was closed for a number of hours while police and paramedics dealt with the incident.
The rider of the scooter was treated at the scene before being taken to hospital with his injuries described as "serious".
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: “At 12.30pm today, we received a report of a collision between a car and a mobility scooter on the A184 in West Boldon.
“Emergency services attended and the rider of the scooter, a 91-year-old man, has been taken to hospital for treatment with serious injuries.
“A section of the road which was closed following the collision has now re-opened.”
The road reopened to traffic once again at around 3.45pm after the vehicles involved were recovered.
