SEATTLE - With the summer transfer window lurking closer and closer, Major League Soccer teams are looking for reinforcements from Europe that could turn around their seasons. In the latest MLS transfer rumor mill, LA Galaxy is looking to finalize a deal to bring Marco Reus to the United States, while San Diego FC announced the signature of Mexico's Hirving Lozano.
After Olivier Giroud signed a contract that will see him join LAFC in the summer, its city rival is looking to add more quality to its squad by making an offer to German midfielder Marco Reus, who is a free agent after running out his contract with Borussia Dortmund.
LA Galaxy is looking as the most likely destination for Reus, who spent the last 12 years of his career playing for Dortmund in the German Bundesliga. According to The Athletic, the 35-year-old is in advanced talks with the team and could sign a contract in the next few weeks.
The Galaxy agreed to a deal with Charlotte FC for Reus' discovery rights, giving the five-time MLS champions the right to negotiate with the player. In exchange of Reus' discovery rights, Charlotte will receive some allocation money up front.
Although the Galaxy now have all the freedom to talk to the former Borussia Dortmund captain, the most they can offer Reus is $1.7 million a year since all their designated player spots are currently filled. The player also has offers from Saudi Arabia and Europe, according to The Athletic.
In other news, San Diego FC, the new expansion team that will enter MLS in 2025, officialized the signing of Hirving Lozano from PSV for a reported fee of $12 million.
The Mexican will join San Diego on January 1 and will be under contract through the 2028 MLS season with an option of two more years.
"The club's project and plans for San Diego's Right to Dream Academy resonated deeply with the career path I've had in this sport, said Lozano as he was announced as the team's new designated player. "I identified with the project immediately and I am confident we will be able to help a lot of youth players from both sides of the border," he added.
Despite being less than a year away from its debut in MLS, San Diego FC only counts with three other players currently in its payroll. Goalkeeper Duran Ferree, forward Marcus Ingvartsen and midfielder Jeppe Tverskov will join 'Chucky' in January 1.
Lozano's signature was just the second transfer confirmed by an MLS team for a player currently in Europe in the past two weeks. Austin FC acquired Osman Bukari from Serbian side Red Star Belgrade for a reported fee of $7 million. The 25-year-old striker will be under contract through the 2027 season.
Bukari and Giroud will be eligible for selection once the MLS Secondary Transfer Window opens on July 18.
