MLS Makes Decision on Discipline for Red Bulls’ Vanzeir for Racist Language During March

MLS announced it has suspended Red Bulls forward Dante Vanzeir for six regular season games using a racist remark in a game vs. San Jose on Sunday. Vanzeir is also suspended for exhibition games, including the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and MLS NEXT Pro games, until the regular season suspension is complete.

In addition to the suspension, Vanzeir was fined an undisclosed amount and must participate in league-mandated training and education session, along with a restorative practices program.

In the Red Bulls’ game vs. the Earthquake over the weekend, San Jose forward Jeremy Ebobisse accused Vanzeir of using a “racial remark” in the second half. The game was stopped for around 18 minutes after it happened, and Vanzeir was taken out of the game 15 minutes after it restarted.

On Tuesday, Vanzeir apologized to San Jose and said he would accept any punishment MLS decides.

“I accept full responsibility for my actions. While I did not intend to cause any harm or offense with my language, I know that I did and for that I am deeply sorry,” Vanzeir said as part of his apology. “I will use this opportunity to better myself, reflect and dedicate my time and efforts to work with organizations that tackle racial injustice.”
