SEATTLE - After a strong start to the season, the Philadelphia Phillies might want to rearrange their pitching rotation. Ranger Suárez had another strong outing on April 16 with a shutout win against the Colorado Rockies.
The Venezuelan was on the mount for the whole game and he finished the night with a dominant win. He struck out eight batters and allowed seven hits and just one walk. He completed the nine innings in 112 pitches - 79 strikes - and got a career-high 18 swings and misses. No matter what type of ball the Venezuelan threw, Rockies players couldn't stop whiffing at his pitches.
The Venezuelan played his fourth game of the season and in his last two he is yet to allow a run. In fact, Suárez hasn't allowed a run in 18 consecutive innings and improved his ERA to 1.73 this season, the lowest ERA by a Phillies lefty through four starts to start a season since Steve Carlton's 1.69 ERA in 1983.
Currently the Phillies' No.3 starter, Suárez has already pitched 20% of the innings he threw in the whole of last season (125 IP in 2023). Through four starts this season, the Venezuelan has the second-best WHIP in the National League (0.77) just behind Milwaukee's Freddy Peralta (0.68).
Out of Suárez' 112 pitches, 40 of them were sinkers and his pitches ranged a velocity from 74 to 93.5 mph. To make it even better, the Venezuelan has only allowed two runs in 21 IP in the month of April.
