MLB playoff picture: A look at the spots left to be decided with under 1 week left in the 2023 season

The final week of MLB’s season is finally here and the regular season is nearly over.

But don’t get it twisted — there’s still plenty of intrigue along the way. The playoffs might be near but a lot of things still haven’t quite been figured out.

The standings across the league are still in flux. We don’t know who is going to play who. We don’t even know where the best teams in the AL are going to be playing at quite yet. It’s so exciting.

It’s also a lot, I know. But don’t you worry — you don’t have to keep up with all of it alone. We’re here to do that for you.

Here’s where everything stands as the final week of the regular season continues.

AL East

In a regular year, the Orioles might be running away with the AL East considering their 97-59 record, but the Rays are right behind them.

The Orioles (97-59) sitting 2.5 games ahead of the Rays (95-62). The winner of this division will be crowned the No. 1 seed in the American League.

The O’s have six games left on their schedule. The Rays have five left on theirs. Things are going to come down to the wire here. Can’t wait.

AL West

As exciting as things are in the AL East, the AL West’s race might actually be a bit tighter.

The Rangers (88-68), Astros (86-71) and Mariners (84-72) are climbing for the top. The Rangers hold a 2.5-game lead over the Stros and a 4-game lead over the Mariners.

One of these teams isn’t making the playoffs, y’all. That’s pretty wild!

NL Wild Card

Obviously, there are three wild card slots available in each league now. But there are only so many teams that can actually make the playoffs.

There’s a battle for the NL Wild Card slot right now.  The Diamondbacks (82-74), Cubs (82-74) and Marlins (81-75) are all within a half-game of each other for the final two Wild Card slots in the National League. Fun!

Again, folks, one of these teams is not making the playoffs. That’s wild.

AL Wild Card

The loser of the AL East race will clinch one of these spots. The Blue Jays have the second spot right now, with the Astros in the third spot … and the Mariners just 1.5 games out!
