T. Siddique, Kalpetta MLA, has sought a special task force involving fire and rescue services personnel, to clear traffic block on Ghat Road to Wayanad.
Addressing the media here on Tuesday, he blamed the Union and State governments for the recurring instances of traffic block on the road from Thamarassery. Mr. Siddique alleged that both the governments were not doing enough to solve the problem. Though the issue was taken up in the Assembly several times, no action had been taken yet. The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change had given away forest land to straighten the curves on the road in 2018, but the State government did not follow it up.
The MLA’s demand comes against the backdrop of vehicles piling up for hours on Ghat Road on Sunday.
Mr. Siddique said the recurring traffic block would affect the tourism prospects of the district. He also demanded that steps be taken to construct an alternative road from Padinjarathara to Poozhithodu at a cost of ₹100 crore. He said he would meet Union Ministers with the demand and organise a people’s agitation to make it a reality.
