Missouri Man Pleads Guilty To White House Barrier Crash

Tire marks remain on a curb in Lafayette Square park near the White House, May 23, 2023, in Washington. A Missouri man pleaded guilty Monday, May 13, 2024, to crashing a rented truck into White

A 20-year-old man from Missouri has pleaded guilty to damaging government property after crashing a rental truck into White House barriers and displaying a Nazi flag during his arrest last year. The incident occurred when the man drove a U-Haul truck onto a sidewalk near White House grounds, causing pedestrians to flee in fear. Fortunately, no one was injured despite the reckless actions.

The man now faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison for the felony charge of depredation of government property. Prosecutors have recommended a prison term of up to eight years, but the final decision lies with the judge who will sentence him on August 23.

According to reports, the man flew from St. Louis to Washington, D.C., rented the truck in Herndon, Virginia, and then deliberately crashed it into the barriers on May 22, 2023. After the truck became disabled and started emitting smoke and fluids, the man exited the vehicle and retrieved a flag with a Nazi swastika from his backpack.

During his arrest, the man expressed his intention to 'get to the White House, seize power, and be put in charge of the nation.' He made alarming statements to Secret Service agents about his willingness to resort to violence, including harming the President if necessary.

It was revealed that the man purchased the Nazi flag online due to his admiration for Adolf Hitler and the Nazis' history, as stated by prosecutors. His defense attorney mentioned that the man is undergoing treatment for schizophrenia and plans to present a medical specialist at his sentencing.

This disturbing incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and security measures in safeguarding government institutions. The upcoming sentencing will determine the consequences for the man's actions and provide closure for the potentially dangerous situation that unfolded near the White House.
