Missouri voters may decide on a citizen-initiated constitutional amendment providing a state constitutional right to abortion in Nov. 2024.
Missourians for Constitutional Freedom is leading the campaign in support of the amendment, which would provide a constitutional right to reproductive freedom. The amendment defines this as “the right to make and carry out decisions about all matters relating to reproductive health care, including but not limited to prenatal care, childbirth, postpartum care, birth control, abortion care, miscarriage care, and respectful birthing conditions.” The amendment would also provide that the state legislature may enact laws that regulate abortion after fetal viability.
The campaign has until May 5, 2024, to submit enough valid signatures to the secretary of state. In Missouri, the number of signatures required to qualify an initiated constitutional amendment for the ballot is equal to 8 percent of the votes cast for governor in the previous gubernatorial election in six of the eight state congressional districts. This means that the smallest possible requirement is 171,592 valid signatures. If enough valid signatures are submitted, the amendment will be placed on the 2024 ballot for Missouri voters to decide.
