Missing student mysteriously found dead with her mobile phone lying next to her

A missing student has been found dead in mysterious circumstances with her mobile phone next to her.

Princeton University undergraduate Misrach Ewunetie, 20, from Ohio, in the US, was discovered behind tennis courts near the edge of the Ivy League campus by an employee on Thursday after she was last seen six days ago.

The student was last seen on October 14 at 3am near Princeton University's Scully Hall, a student residential home where she was living in New Jersey.

Ms Ewunetie's family became concerned for her wellbeing and used the Find My Phone app to see where she was.

It 'pinged' she was near Montgomery Township which is a district several miles away from where the student was living.

Police have refused to say whether the phone 'ping' was wrong or if she went into the building and came back.

Authorities, however, confirmed the student's mobile phone was found near her body and do not believe it was planted there.

Mercer County Prosecutors Office have so far ruled out her death being suspicious: "Her death does not appear suspicious or criminal in nature."

An autopsy will be carried out to determine the cause of death with further details expected to be released in due course.

The student's body was found in hideaway area of the Ivy League campus which can only be accessed through authorised badge holders.

Police said she had volunteered at Princeton's Terrace Club for a music gig after a person dropped out last minute when she was last seen before her disappearance.

Tragically, her body was later found nearly two miles away.

Her disappearance saw police stage a hunt for several days to try and find her as they deployed helicopters, drones and boats around the Ivy League university.

W. Rochelle Calhoun, Princeton's vice president for campus life, paid tribute to Ms Ewunetie.

She said in a statement: "Our hearts go out to her family, her friends and the many others who knew and loved her.

"We are planning an opportunity for students to join together and remember Misrach.

"Information about the gathering will be shared separately when details are known."

Police searched the university's campus and student housing three times and used specialised dogs to find clues.

However, they were unable to look inside any properties due to having no search warrants.

Ewunetie's brother, Universe, claimed earlier in the week his family were being left in the dark about her disappearance and slammed cops for their lack of updates.

He told CNN: "There's no constant update or interaction with us. We're really kept in the dark."

Mr Ewunetie was furious after being told the investigation was going to take take, he added: "That's one thing we don't have. We don't have time."
