Missing hillwalkers found suffering hypothermia and broken leg in rescue mission

A missing hillwalker suffering from hypothermia and another who had a broken leg were found by mountain rescue teams in Kelso on Thursday.

The Border Search and Rescue were alerted to two walkers who were over due on their return from hills in Kelso.

Teams searched the hills surrounding Heatherhope Reservoir, which was the last known location of the walkers.

The first missing hillwalker was found in Cribbs Hope gulley and hypothermia had set in.

The second had fallen and sustained a broken leg on a crag at Scowther Knowe.

The huge exercise by Border Search and Rescue involved administering first aid, navigating steep ground while also carrying stretchers.

A post by Borders Search and Rescue said: "A beautiful day for training this week! The exercise - a search for two over due missing walkers - was packed with practice opportunities.

"It involved teams searching the hills surrounding the Heatherhope Reservoir at the walkers' last known location.

"The first missing person was found in Cribbs Hope gulley suffering from hypothermia. The second was found on a crag on Scowther Knowe, having fallen and broken their leg.

"Navigation, various first aid, steep ground work, rigging over the crags, stretcher carry and some 4x4 driving! A full day! Well done all."

Police Scotland have been contacted for comment.
