Minute's silence held at Council meeting for tragic Michael Whiston who was found decomposed at home

A minute's silence was held for a Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council tenant whose body was found decomposed in his home after he was reported missing for a year.

The remains of 76-year-old Michael Whiston were found by Council workers at 12:25pm on February 2.

The pensioner lived in a council-rented home on the Sallynoggin Road Lower.

At last night's meeting, Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Councillors held a minute's silence for Mr Whiston.

Cathaoirleach Lettie McCarthy said: "I know everybody here has probably heard the very sad passing of one of our tenants, Mr Michael Whiston.

"I would like us to take a minute's silence and a vote of condolence on his sad death."

Sinn Féin representative for Killiney/Shankill, Stefani Howlett, has called for a review of Dun Laoghaire Rathdown County Council's procedures for dealing with tenants they have lost contact with.

She described the events of last week as “incredibly sad” and said “we need to know what happened here and ensure that it doesn’t happen again.”

She added: "Whatever the circumstances it is just tragic and incredibly sad that anybody can be let slip so far off the radar that they can be left undiscovered in their own home, on a busy street for over a year.

"It’s not good enough. We as a society can and need to do better."

A garda spokeswoman said: "Gardaí in Dun Laoghaire are investigating all the circumstances in relation to the discovery of a body at a house on Sallynoggin Road Lower on the afternoon of Wednesday 2nd February, 2022.

"At approximately 12.25pm, the body of a male was discovered at a house. Gardaí attended the scene and the body was removed from the scene to The Dublin City Mortuary, where a post-mortem took place, the results of which are not being released for operational reasons.

"A file is now being prepared for the coroner's court."

A spokeswoman for Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council told Dublin Live: "A minutes silence was arranged last night for Michael Whiston by An Cathaoirleach, Lettie McCarthy at the February Council Meeting.

"A Gardaí investigation into the matter is currently underway and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council will not be issuing a statement at this time."
