Minnesota Law Requires Schools To Provide Menstrual Products

Lucy Trieshmann poses at an NYU School of Law event in New York City

A new Minnesota law has sparked controversy among supporters of former President Donald Trump. The law, signed by Gov. Tim Walz, mandates that public schools must stock menstrual products in both girls and boys bathrooms. This move is aimed at accommodating transgender students and ensuring all students have access to necessary products.

The law, which took effect on January 1, requires school districts and charter schools to provide free menstrual products in restrooms used by students in grades 4 to 12. The bill's sponsor, state Democratic Rep. Sandra Feist, emphasized the importance of inclusivity by rejecting an amendment that would have limited the provision to only 'female' students, noting that not all students who menstruate identify as female.

Supporters of Trump have criticized Gov. Walz, labeling him as 'Tampon Tim' and accusing him of promoting radical policies. Karoline Leavitt, the Trump campaign's national press secretary, expressed concerns about the law, linking it to gender-transition surgeries for minors and other controversial issues.

However, the online backlash prompted a response from Hillary Clinton, who praised Gov. Walz's policy as compassionate and common-sense. Clinton advocated for similar initiatives to be implemented nationwide, highlighting the importance of providing free menstrual products to students.

In addition to the menstrual products law, Gov. Walz has taken steps to protect transgender individuals in Minnesota. He signed an executive order directing state agencies to support those seeking gender-affirming health care services and passed legislation to safeguard access to such care. Furthermore, a law banning conversion therapy, a discredited practice targeting gender identity and sexual orientation, was also enacted under Gov. Walz's administration.
