Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who is also the Democratic vice presidential nominee, recently addressed criticisms regarding his military record during remarks at the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees union convention in Los Angeles. Governor Walz expressed his pride in his service in the Army National Guard, stating that he is 'damn proud' of his military service.
Walz outlined his military background, highlighting his decision to join the Nebraska Army National Guard at the age of 17 and his 24 years of service in the National Guard. He also emphasized his work on the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee during his time in Congress.
In response to attacks from Republicans, including GOP vice presidential candidate JD Vance, who accused him of misrepresenting his military record, Walz reiterated his pride in his service to the country. He emphasized the importance of respecting and honoring the service of all individuals who have worn the uniform.
These remarks come after Vice President Kamala Harris’ campaign acknowledged a statement made by Walz in 2018 where he claimed to have handled assault weapons 'in war.' This led to accusations of 'stolen valor' from Vance, a former Marine Corps member.
Despite facing criticism for retiring before an overseas deployment just before running for Congress, Walz maintains that he is proud of his service and believes that one should never denigrate another person’s service record. He expressed gratitude to all individuals who have served the country, including his political opponents.
While some veterans who served alongside Walz have criticized him for retiring prior to deployment, Walz has defended his actions, stating that he is being attacked for his statements about his record rather than his actual service.
