Sir Keir Starmer has promised to protect Britons from the economic hit of conflict in the Middle East, sparking speculation the government is drawing up plans for an energy support scheme similar to that introduced after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
It comes as the price of oil soared to over $100 a barrel for the first time since 2022 and energy firm bosses warned “we just don't know” how high gas prices will go.
