Mimi Webb's Amelia tour in Newcastle sees singer prove her pedigree as UK pop's brightest prospect

Mimi Webb is a star on the rise and if her sold out show in Newcastle on Monday night is anything to go by, the future of pop is not only in safe hands; it's looking incredibly bright.

The 22-year-old is one of those singers who seems to have come from nowhere to be enjoying chart success in the current climate; but the fact is that she has been steadily building a fan base and accumulating quite a back catalogue for some time, having broken through in a big way with the dynamic Good Without in 2021.

Mimi launched into her capacity gig at the O2 City Hall with rousing show opener Ghost of You, a track from her 2021 EP Seven Shades of Heartbreak and from then on in it was killer tunes all the way, including some beautiful ballads.

While her recent appearance on Saturday NIght Takeaway had some people rather cruelly declaring they'd 'never heard of her,' you should ignore Mimi at your peril as she has the makings of one hell of a pop star, with her new album Amelia giving her an array of anthemic and insanely catchy songs to add to her arsenal, including firm crowd favourites Is it Possible and See You Soon.

Another top tier track from her debut is Both of Us, a song that could you image soaring around a Eurovision arena and, yes, I was one of plenty of people who not so secretly hoped that she would be the UK act for this year!

Unfortunately, Monday's gig had to be stopped three times due to fans in the crowd experiencing medical issues and a concerned Mimi taking swift action to make sure they were alright and, the third and final time sadly robbed the crowd of what was shaping up to be an absolutely stunning rendition of one of Amelia's finest moments, the soaring and heart wrenching Roles Reversed.

Just like Roles Reversed, Last Train to London is a real emotional sucker punch, with the crowd showing their appreciation by holding their mobile phones high and singing along word for word.

In a year that has so far been slightly sparse when it comes to massive pop smashes, Mimi's Red Flags has to be up there as one of the best out of the blocks. It's strong, it's sassy and, unlike red flags in relationships. it's definitely not something to run a mile from.

One of the biggest moments in Mimi's career to date was getting asked to perform at the Platinum Party at the Palace for the Queen's Jubilee last year and it was the song she performed then, House on Fire, that ensured the night ended on a suitable high.

On the evidence of this gig, she'll be making many more big stages her home in the not too distant future. Great vocals, a collection of punchy pop songs under her belt and powerful yet very warm presence.

The UK's new princess of pop might just have had her coronation on Tyneside.
