Milwaukee Security Plan For RNC Protests And Gun Carry

Law enforcement authorities in Milwaukee have unveiled a security plan for the upcoming Republican National Convention, allowing people to carry guns within certain areas near the convention site. The plan includes two circular perimeters around the convention arena, with only convention attendees permitted within the inner perimeter. Pedestrians will be able to move freely between the perimeters without screening, while vehicles will need to pass through checkpoints.

Protesters will be given two stages for demonstrations, one within sight of the convention arena. More than 100 organizations have applied to demonstrate at the convention, with a coalition including local and national groups planning a protest parade on the first day of the event.

The coalition has been seeking a permit for the parade since April 2023, alleging delays and raising concerns about being allowed within view of the arena. The American Civil Liberties Union has filed a lawsuit on their behalf, seeking a temporary injunction to secure a route within sight and hearing of the arena.

The security plan establishes a parade route just inside the outer perimeter, about five blocks from the arena, with a stage for speakers within the route. Another stage for protest speakers will be set up on the northern edge of the perimeter, about a block from the convention site.

The city will provide a sound system for speakers on both stages, with each speaker limited to 20 minutes. The ACLU has expressed disappointment at the size of the inner perimeter but remains committed to ensuring free expression and assembly for protesters.

Authorities emphasize that while people will be allowed to carry guns in certain areas as permitted by state law, any behaviors that could be considered a threat or harm to the public will not be tolerated. The security plan aims to balance the rights of protesters with the need for safety and order during the convention.
