As the Republican National Convention commences in Milwaukee, Mayor Cavalier Johnson expressed his confidence in the security measures in place following the recent assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.
During a press conference on Monday morning, Mayor Johnson reassured the public, stating that the extensive work carried out over the past 18 months has instilled confidence in the security preparedness for the event.
He emphasized that both the United States Secret Service and local law enforcement agencies, including the Milwaukee Police Department, have been diligent in ensuring public safety throughout the convention.
Mayor Johnson reported that the overnight activities around the convention venue were relatively calm, with only two minor arrests made. The incidents involved individuals who were intoxicated and had altercations with the police.
Given that Wisconsin is an 'open carry' state, individuals are permitted to carry firearms within the soft perimeter outside the Fiserv Forum, which falls outside Secret Service jurisdiction. Mayor Johnson expressed his broader concern about gun safety, highlighting the need for stricter regulations to prevent individuals who should not have access to deadly weapons from obtaining them.
The mayor's remarks underscore the ongoing efforts to maintain a secure environment during the Republican National Convention, with a focus on ensuring the safety of all attendees and residents in Milwaukee.
