The mayor of Milwaukee, Cavalier Johnson, has reassured attendees of the Republican National Convention about the high level of security in place for the event, particularly ahead of former President Donald Trump's speech scheduled for Thursday night. Johnson emphasized that the security measures in place are of the highest designation a community can receive.
During a news conference on Thursday morning, Johnson likened the security setup to that of certain institutions in Washington, DC, stating that it has been brought to Milwaukee for the convention. He expressed gratitude towards the Secret Service for their exceptional work in ensuring the safety of all attendees.
Security at political events has been a topic of concern following the recent incident where the former President was shot while speaking at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Questions have been raised regarding how the shooter managed to gain rooftop access approximately 150 meters away from Trump's position at the podium.
President Joe Biden has taken action in response to the incident, directing US Secret Service director Kimberly Cheatle to conduct a comprehensive review of all security measures in place for the Republican National Convention. Cheatle confirmed that the Secret Service is solely responsible for the implementation and execution of security protocols at the convention site.
