Just two weeks after Hurricane Helene caused unprecedented storm surge in Tampa, a new storm named Milton is predicted to bring even higher surge levels to the region.
Despite Helene's eye staying over 100 miles away from Tampa Bay, tide gauges in the area recorded levels never seen before, rising several feet above normal.
Now, as Milton approaches, forecasters are predicting surge levels twice as high as those seen during Helene's impact. The expected surge for both locations is between 10 to 15 feet.
Several factors are contributing to the potential exacerbation of storm surge flooding. The size and speed of the approaching storm are anticipated to increase before it makes landfall, which typically leads to higher maximum storm surge levels.
The exact track of the storm as it nears landfall will also play a crucial role in determining the extent of storm surge in Tampa and surrounding areas.
