For millions of American workers, taking time away from work can mean facing a difficult financial decision. A new bipartisan bill could offer another option. The More Paid Leave for More Americans Act would create a pilot grant programme to help states provide workers with at least six weeks of partially paid family and medical leave.
The proposed leave would cover several major life events, including the birth of a child, caring for a sick family member and dealing with a worker's own medical needs. But the proposal would not create a single nationwide paid leave system. Instead, it would give states flexibility to design and operate their own programmes.
