Millionaire, 69, faces jail after refusing to tear down huge luxury 'mancave'

A millionaire who illegally built 'Britain's best man cave' in his garden could face jail - after the latest deadline to tear it down expired on Thursday.

Wealthy accountant Graham Wildin, 69, has been embroiled in a long-running planning row after he installed a bowling alley, cinema, squash courts, private casino and bar in the plush extension eight years ago.

Last year the Court of Appeal rejected his bid to quash a suspended prison sentence given for not removing the structure.

The court also set a deadline of March 10, 2022 to demolish it or warned him he would be jailed.

And with that deadline now passed, it is understood none of the required removal work has yet been carried out.

Onlookers said there was no evidence that any steps had been taken by Wildin to pull it down.

Wildin first sparked outrage amongst his neighbours when he was later found to have carried out the work without the required planning permission in 2014.

A lengthy legal fight followed ending with a High Court judge handing down an injunction in 2018 and Wildin was initially given until the end of April 2020 to remove the 10,000sq/ft complex.

This ordered Wildin to tear down the sports centre as it had a serious impact on his neighbours in Cinderford, Glos.

But after failing to carry out the court's orders, he was found in contempt of court.

Mr Justice Jarman handed down a custodial sentence of six weeks, suspended for 12 months in November last year and a new deadline was set.

Wildin has now reached the deadline to comply with the order to complete the required work under the threat of prison if he failed to do so.

During the judgment, Lady Justice Laing also found that the council had no way of proving whether Mr Wildin could afford to demolish the building, as he has never made full disclosure of his assets.

But she described him as "entirely the author of his own misfortune" and said there was "reasonable basis" to believe he was a very wealthy man."

Forest of Dean District Council was also been awarded substantial costs as part of the hearing.

A spokesperson for the council said it could not currently comment.

They added: "Unfortunately due to the ongoing legal investigation, Forest of Dean District Council is unable to comment at this stage."

But speaking after an earlier hearing, Cllr Tim Gwilliam said the whole process had been completely avoidable.

He said: "If Mr Wildin had followed the guidance of experts and complied with the sentencing originally handed down, this further court date would not have been necessary.

“As a council it is important to ensure that development proposals improve the environments in which they live, whilst safeguarding the community.

"Every year, hundreds of people ask the council for planning advice and follow it. This has not been the case in Mr Wildin’s instance.

“The Forest of Dean District Council would like to again thank the people of the Forest for their patience during this lengthy process as we work to secure demolition of the building.”

Wildin had argued in the past that he did not need planning permission for the construction, and that having to pull down the luxury leisure complex would ruin him and force him to lay off 40 staff

In November 2018, Forest of Dean District Council obtained an injunction against Mr Wildin and he had until April 25, 2020, to demolish the building he built in 2014 and return the land to its original state.

He was warned at the time that failure to comply with the injunction would see him held in contempt of court, enabling him to be jailed and have assets seized.
