England Women defender Millie Bright has called on the Lionesses to be “more clinical and ruthless” in front of goal after drawing their opening match of the Arnold Clark Cup.
England were held to a 1-1 tie by Canada at Middlesbrough’s Riverside Stadium last night, with Bright’s first-half goal cancelled out by Janine Beckie after the break.
The Lionesses controlled large parts of the game, having nearly 60 per cent of the possession and managing 16 shots on goal.
Canada, however, held on to draw and Bright says she and her team-mates must take their chances if they are to improve under Sarina Wiegman.
“I think it was a great performance, especially the first half,” said Bright. “We looked really sharp and defensively we were tight up to the ball.
“We were turning Canada over and winning it back. I thought we could have been better in possession, I thought the game became very transitional in the second half.
“We could have had more than just the one goal, so it’s about being more clinical and ruthless in the final third.
“If we put our chances away in the first half then we don’t leave ourselves in a position where they get one goal and they’re back in it. But it was a fantastic goal by them.
“With every game you can take away lots of positives, but also lots to work on and it is just about staying on our journey and developing game in, game out.”
England are next in action on Sunday when they take on Spain, who drew their opening match of the round-robin tournament 1-1 against Germany.
