A military aircraft crashed near Albuquerque’s main airport and a US Air Force base on Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred just before 2 p.m. MT on the south side of Albuquerque International Sunport, close to Kirtland Air Force Base.
The pilot of the aircraft ejected before the crash and was found conscious and breathing. The pilot was then transported to a hospital with serious injuries. Fortunately, the pilot was the only occupant of the aircraft at the time of the crash.
Details about the type of aircraft involved, its destination, and point of origin, as well as the cause of the crash, have not been immediately released. The pilot's identity has also not been disclosed at this time.
An investigation into the crash is being conducted by Kirtland Air Force Base and the Federal Aviation Administration. Pictures from the scene show mangled wreckage on the desert landscape outside the airport, with Bernalillo County firefighters managing to extinguish a fire at the crash site.
Additionally, two civilians were evaluated at the crash site but did not require hospitalization. The reasons for their evaluation were not specified by officials.
