Miley Cyrus released her new single, Flowers, today (January 13), on her ex-husband Liam Hemsworth’s birthday in a not-so-subtle nod to their relationship and subsequent break-up.
In the song, Cyrus sings about how she can buy herself flowers and go dancing, and sings: “I can love me better than you can.”
Cyrus, 30, and Hemsworth, 33, began an on-again-off-again relationship in 2009 and were engaged in 2012 before breaking up in 2013.
They reunited in 2016 and got married in December 2018, but the couple split up again in August 2019 and their divorce was finalised in January 2020.
The lyrics seem to reference her relationship with Hemsworth, including in the opening verse in which Cyrus sings: “We were right ’til we weren’t, built a home and watched it burn.”

In November 2018, Cyrus and Hemsworth lost their California home in the devastating wildfires that claimed more than 100 lives and destroyed more than 25,000 buildings.
At the time, Cyrus said on Twitter: “Completely devastated by the fires affecting my community. I am one of the lucky ones.
“My animals and LOVE OF MY LIFE made it out safely and that’s all that matters right now. My house no longer stands but the memories shared with family and friends stand strong.”

Later in the song, Cyrus sings: “I didn’t wanna leave, baby, I didn’t wanna fight.”
Appearing on the Howard Stern show in December 2020, Cyrus opened up about her break-up and told the host: “When I come home, I want to be anchored by someone. I don’t get off on drama or fighting.”
Around the time of their divorce, People magazine reported that Cyrus had been fighting for their relationship, but Hemsworth filed for divorce, citing “irreconcilable differences”.
In the accompanying music video, directed by Jacob Bixenman, Cyrus can be seen dancing through the streets of Los Angeles, swimming in a pool, and working out in her underwear, before donning a suit and joyfully dancing around her house.
Miley Cyrus’s new album, titled Endless Summer Vacation, will be released on March 10.
