Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has been told that on-loan midfielder Matteo Guendouzi is set to become one of the best in the world ahead of a potential summer exit. The 22-year-old has spent the season with Marseille, making 30 Ligue 1 appearances under Jorge Sampaoli.
The loan deal between the clubs is said to have included a permanent option, with the Frenchman reportedly set to make the move in the summer. It would also put an end to a difficult stay at the Emirates Stadium for Guendouzi.
The midfielder hasn’t made an appearance for the Gunners since the end of the 2019/20 season, having been involved in an incident with Brighton striker Neal Maupay. Reports then suggested that it led to some friction between Arteta and the player, sending him out on loan after.

His absence has left the side short in midfield, though, with Thomas Partey’s injury leaving a gap in the side in the short-term. However, in the long-term it could also be a regret for Arsenal, according to quotes from Marseille boss Sampaoli.
The manager of the French side left no doubt about how highly Guendouzi is rated at the club, saying before his side’s clash with Montpellier: "He [Guendouzi] is on his way to becoming one of the best midfielders in the world.
"Guendouzi's physical condition is exceptional. He can recover very quickly, he has less risk of injury. He also managed to impose himself, which can be seen with his selection for the France team. Finally, he is the soul of the team. He hasn't progressed thanks to me, it's in general, he has matured."
It’s a glowing review of a player that could fulfill his potential with the French club. However for Arteta, it could be a costly mistake both for the side and financially if they want to find a top midfielder for the future.
