Arsenal’s defeat against Southampton has seriously hampered their chances for a place in the Champions League next season. However, Mikel Arteta can try to reverse the fortunes by utilising Nicolas Pepe as a striker.
The Gunners have looked weak in the striker position, with Alexandre Lacazette or Eddie Nketiah yet to score from open play in the Premier League this year. The lack of goals from the frontman has been the reason Arsenal have not secured a place in the top four.
Arteta must find a solution within the squad after failing to sign a striker in the January transfer window. Pepe could certainly be the answer.

The Ivorian has only been used as a right-winger this campaign and has looked largely isolated whenever in possession of the ball. This had led to a lack of threat from the right side, and consequently, his place in the team was taken by Bukayo Saka, who has thrived whenever given the opportunity on the right side.
Pepe has only scored once in the Premier League this season. However, this could change if Arteta decides to utilise him as a striker. Despite concerns over the 26-year-old’s overall play since being at the club, his finishing has been one of the positives since his arrival.
With Pepe’s lack of goal contributions this season, time is running out for the forward to succeed in an Arsenal shirt. He has three years remaining on his contract, meaning towards the end of the season, the club will have to come to a decision whether or not to sell him, but his career at the club could be rejuvenated if given a chance in the striker role.
Lacazette has taken over the responsibility from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to be the club’s main striker and captain. However, a lack of goals from the Frenchman has led to a selection of fans calling for him to be dropped.
Nketiah is Arsenal’s backup option, however, the defeat to Southampton proved that he is not up to the quality if the Gunners want to qualify for the Champions League. A different solution is needed.
Pepe deserves a chance to be the answer to these solutions. Utilising him as a striker could rejuvenate his Arsenal career and potentially boost the Gunners’ what now seems as lost hopes for a Champions League place ahead of next season.
