Mikel Arteta's major William Saliba injury boost after Arsenal vs Sporting Europa League tie

Arsenal endured a difficult evening on Thursday, getting knocked out of the Europa League by Sporting CP.

Mikel Arteta's side drew 1-1 with Sporting on the night following a 2-2 stalemate in the first leg. The match then eventually went to extra time and penalties, where the Portuguese outfit won 5-3 after Sporting goalkeeper Adan saved Gabriel Martinelli's spot-kick.

The Gunners also suffered two injuries in the first half, with Takehiro Tomiyasu and William Saliba both withdrawn after picking up issues in the opening exchanges of the game. Right-back Tomiyasu was forced off just nine minutes after slipping awkwardly when attempting to tackle Francisco Trincao.

Centre-back Saliba then came off shortly after, holding his lower back, clearly in some discomfort. After the match, Arteta updated the media on the defensive duo, admitting that Tomiyasu's injury looked the more serious.

"Tomiyasu looks pretty serious from his reaction straight and what he said to me, but obviously, it’s very early," the Spaniard said when speaking about the Japanese international in his post-match press conference. He then added on Saliba: "Willy, I don’t know, he had some discomfort and could not continue so we had to take him out."

The Gunners will assess Saliba over the next 48 hours to decide if he's available for Sunday's Premier League clash against Crystal Palace, football.london understands whilst Tomiyasu is expected to miss out against the Eagles.

football.london's Tom Canton delivered a positive update that will potentially ease some fans' worries regarding the former Marseille loanee, reporting that the French international didn't appear to have any strapping as he made his way out of the dressing room.

Canton Tweeted: "Just seen William Saliba walk past the mixed zone. Walking very normally. Of course that tells us little but hopefully it’s only a minor precautionary substitution."
