Mikel Arteta record compared to Arsene Wenger after 100 Arsenal games

Mikel Arteta took charge of his 100th Premier League game as Arsenal boss at the weekend as the Gunners kept up their 100 per cent start to the season.

The Spaniard led the Gunners to victory over Fulham at the Emirates Stadium - goals from Martin Odegaard and Gabriel Magalhaes seeing them come from behind following Aleksandar Mitrovic’s opening strike.

The win sees the North Londoners occupy top spot in the Premier League table with four matches of the season played and signals an impressive reversal in fortunes with Arsenal having slumped to three consecutive losses at the start of last season.

Arteta certainly has to take a lot of credit for his ability to get his side back on track and supporters will now be intrigued as to what the club will be able to achieve at the end of the campaign having only just missed out on Champions League football just a few months ago.

And considering how comparable Arteta’s record in charge of Arsenal is to that of Gunners’ legendary manager Arsene Wenger, something special could certainly be on the horizon.

Of his 100 league games at the helm, the former Manchester City coach has claimed 53 victories. That is only one fewer than Wenger, a record that saw the Frenchman rack-up 1.82 points per game compared to Arteta’s 1.75.

That impressive form certainly paid dividends in just Wenger's second season at the club as Arsenal won their first Premier League crown - the Frenchman of course masterminded two further successful title tilts, as well as seven FA Cup crowns.

Meanwhile, it could be suggested that Arteta’s Arsenal have been more entertaining having scored 162 goals over his tenure, with just 156 strikes coming across Wenger’s first century of matches in charge.

Having kept a close eye on his former club’s fortunes since his departure at the end of the 2017/18 season, Wenger has been full of praise for the job that Arteta has done at the Emirates Stadium and the way that he has managed to galvanise not only the squad but the entire club.

Speaking in March, he said: "We still have some way to go because we were dominating in England for some time. All the ingredients are there, the club has invested a lot of money for the first time since we have built the stadium.

“The team is stable now with their results, his [Arteta’s] leadership looks to be accepted by the players and there is a connection between him and the team. So overall, what you see from outside is positive.”

Arteta will hope to quickly add even more victories to his impressive record as Arsenal boss, with the Gunners set to be in action twice over the next week. They first host Aston Villa at the Emirates Stadium in midweek before following that up with a trip to Old Trafford to face Erik ten Hag’s resurgent Manchester United side.
