Mikel Arteta gives Bukayo Saka update after Arsenal forward suffers illness ahead of Liverpool

Mikel Arteta has confirmed Bukayo Saka will be fit to feature against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp's side host the Gunners in a fixture of great significance for both sides, Arsenal aiming to continue their pursuit of the Premier League title and the Reds searching to keep their faint top-four hopes alive.

Saka was left on the substitutes bench for Arsenal's 4-1 win over Leeds United last Saturday, before being introduced on the hour mark, with Arteta confirming why he was left out of the starting eleven pre kick-off. He said: “He wasn’t able to train yesterday as he wasn’t well but today he feels a little bit better, so we’ve put Gabby [Jesus] in." Saka was thrusted into the action just after the hour mark and finished the game with no concerns."

But the England international has now fully recovered and is in line to start from the off against the Reds this weekend.

"No, no real changes with the rest of the players that were still injured," said Arteta when quizzed on the availability of his squad. "We have some hope with one of them who will maybe be able to train but we'll see."

Asked to confirm is Saka was among those in a position to be involved, the Spaniard added: "Yes, he is."

Arsenal will also be hoping to welcome back defender William Saliba, who has missed the previous two games with a back problem, though the Arsenal boss refused to confirm or deny whether the Frenchman is in contention.

"Yeah, I’m very hopeful and he is as well," said Arteta. "Back injuries are a bit tricky, how they evolve with the load in certain areas but he’s very positive about it, the medical staff are positive about it, so let’s push it every day a little bit and see how he copes with that and how the pain develops. He’s so willing to be back with the team."
