Mikel Arteta delivers optimistic injury update for Takehiro Tomiyasu with Arsenal in contact with Japan team

Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has confirmed Takehiro Tomiyasu’s injury is not “a big issue” and he should be fit to play for Japan at the World Cup in Qatar this month.

Tomiyasu suffered an injury scare last week when he limped off against FC Zurich in the Europa League with a muscle issue.

And he is not expected to play against Brighton in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday.

Arsenal are continuing to assess the right-back, but the initial diagnosis is a promising one and it is hoped he will be able to play for Japan at the World Cup.

The Japanese FA have been in contact with Arsenal since Tomiyasu’s injury and they continue to be so.

“It’s a small injury for Tomi, he did well to stop during the match, so it’s not going to be a big issue,” said Arteta.

“I think he will be back in a week or so, so hopefully he will be fine to start at the World Cup.”
