Mike Tyson explains why he fell asleep during interview with Piers Morgan

Mike Tyson has admitted he fell asleep during an interview with Piers Morgan after being given some painkillers by his wife.

Former undisputed heavyweight champion Tyson, 56, spoke with Morgan and fellow TV host Susanna Reid on Good Morning Britain before his comeback fight against fellow legend Roy Jones Jr in November 2020. When Reid asked him a question about the absence of headgear in their exhibition clash, Tyson appeared to briefly fall asleep as he lowered his head for a few seconds before giving a delayed response.

'Iron Mike' has now laughed off the interview in a recent chat with Morgan on Talk TV, stating: “I had hurt myself at that particular time I guess I was training, something happened, I hurt myself and I received some painkillers from my wife and after I received these painkillers, I was just incapable of articulating anything, it was just a mess,” Tyson said.

Morgan then jokingly replied: “People thought I was so boring as an interviewer that I had literally driven you to sleep… I need you to take the wrap for that because I got killed for that, it was like ‘Morgan you’re sending people to sleep, what’s the matter with you?’ I need you to take the wrap for this one.” Tyson then took responsibility for the awkward interview, stating: "It was my fault everybody, it was my fault."

Tyson had fans worried for his health again this year when he was spotted using a walking stick whilst in New York and also needed a wheelchair whist passing through Miami airport. The ring legend insisted he was suffering from flare-ups of sciatica, with Tyson adding that the back condition sometimes leaves him unable to talk.

The photos of Tyson needing assistance came just days after he issued a prediction on his life expectancy during an episode of his HotBoxin' podcast. "We’re all going to die one day of course," he said. "When I look in the mirror, I see those little spots on my face. I say, ‘wow. That means my expiration date is coming close, really soon'.”

Despite the concerns for Tyson's wellbeing, he insisted that he is training every day and watching what he eats. Tyson, who still holds the record for being the youngest undisputed heavyweight champion in history, said of his health: "It's splendid right now, I've been training every day. I've been working out. I've been slightly watching what I'm eating and I feel wonderful."
