Mike McDaniel responds to Mike Gesicki trade rumors

With Miami Dolphins tight end Mike Gesicki learning a new system that he doesn’t exactly fit into at first glance, he’s taking his rolling with the changes throughout practices and preseason games.

On Wednesday, Pro Football Focus’ Doug Kyed reported that the Dolphins have had trade discussions surrounding the former Penn State product, a report that local reporters dismissed.

Head coach Mike McDaniel spoke to the media Thursday morning and addressed the rumors these exact rumors.

“These reports are tricky to me,” McDaniel said. “I’ve alluded to this before, at the beginning of the offseason, during training camp, during the offseason in general, [general managers] have work to do, and they’re not just watching us coach. When people report and they use that loose verbiage of ‘his name’s been brought up’ or whatever, the report is kinda misleading because there probably should be a lot of names on that report.

“All I’m focused on, and that’s regardless of what people try to drum up, I’m focused on coaching Mike. Mike’s focused on getting better… He had a great week of practice this week which tells you a lot about that individual because there has been random noise that he hasn’t listened to clearly. He’s putting his best foot forward, and that’s all I’m concerned about. It’s my job to coach the players on the team, and I like coaching Mike.”

Essentially McDaniel is saying that Gesicki could’ve been mentioned because Chris Grier and his team are always discussing a lot of their players with other teams. That’s how the business goes among front offices.

They just have to hope that Gesicki isn’t discouraged by these rumors because if he does eventually fill the role well, and Miami wishes to sign him long-term, he may not be happy with these discussions being public because it makes the situation seem more negative than it may be.
