After Liam Coen left to return to Kentucky following the 2022 season, the Los Angeles Rams replaced him with Mike LaFleur as Sean McVay’s offensive coordinator. Mike Martz, a former head coach of the Rams and current contributor on The 33rd Team, believes that McVay was wise to bring in LaFleur to aid with the offense.
Ever since McVay was named the head coach of the Rams in 2017, he’s been calling the plays on offense. Regardless of whether he’s had an offensive coordinator or not, McVay has continued to call plays, and he’ll do the same with LaFleur on the coaching staff.
Bringing in LaFleur is more about having another smart offensive mind in the building for McVay to connect with. LaFleur comes from the Kyle Shanahan coaching tree, and McVay likely wants to pick his brain on what the San Francisco 49ers do to excel on the offensive side of the ball.
Martz believes that LaFleur is another set of eyes for McVay, and having him around could revitalize the energetic head coach of the Rams. McVay was seemingly running out of gas at the end of last season, so having someone to lighten the load could help in the long term.
Following Coen’s short stint as offensive coordinator, Martz thinks the Rams hit it out of the park by bringing in LaFleur this offseason.
