Mike Huckabee, the nominee for US ambassador to Israel under President-elect Donald Trump, indicated in an interview on Israeli Army Radio that the US could potentially back the Israeli government if it were to attempt to annex the West Bank.
During the interview, Huckabee was asked about the Trump administration's stance on annexation in the West Bank, to which he responded affirmatively, stating, 'Well of course. I won’t make the policy, I will carry out the policy of the president. But he has already demonstrated in his first term that there’s never been an American president that has been more helpful in securing an understanding of the sovereignty of Israel.'
Huckabee highlighted previous actions taken by President Trump, such as moving the US embassy to Jerusalem, recognizing the Golan Heights as Israeli territory, and acknowledging Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, as evidence of strong support for Israel's sovereignty.
He expressed confidence that this support would continue under the new administration, emphasizing Trump's track record of backing Israel on key issues.
The remarks made by Huckabee signal a potential shift in US policy towards the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with the suggestion of backing annexation being a departure from previous administrations' approaches.
It remains to be seen how this stance will be translated into official policy once Huckabee assumes his role as ambassador to Israel and how it will impact the ongoing peace process in the region.
